-Yeah, watch it. They’re a crack shot,- Gibson sent, smiling at her from across the room.

That had come a little too close for comfort. -I can see that. They shot that blind and nearly hit me.- She wondered if this was the Wildkat that Frak had mentioned and looked around the room as best she could. Like the rest of the building, it was in a major state of disrepair. The barrier on the balcony was missing whole sections, the walls were a mess with mould growing up them in many places, and there were bits of furniture scattered about the room, much of it broken.

- I think it’s just one person,- Gibson said.

-We have their attention split now,- Veronica said. -We should use that to our advantage.-

Frankie nodded. She was at one side of the room, close to the door, while her teammates were fifteen metres away across the room. No matter how good they were, the sniper would find it much harder to cover each of them.

-I need a distraction. Something to focus their attention on you while I’ll make a run for the end of the room. When I do that, Vi, take your shot and make it count. Sound good?-

-It sounds dangerous,- Gibson answered her. -But anything’s better than sitting here waiting to be shot.-

-What Gibson means to say is, ‘Yeah, that’s great’,- Veronica said.

- Frankie knows that.-

-Is that right, Mr Grumpy,- Veronica said.

-We all know that he likes to portray that grizzled hard-boiled detective persona.- Frankie smiled.

-True, but we know he’s just a big fluffy teddy bear,- Veronica quipped and pinched his cheek.

“Get off.” Gibson swatted her hand away. -It’s not fair when you girls gang up on me.-

-You love it, really,- Veronica said.

-No comment,- Gibson answered. -Can we focus on not dying here?”

Seeing these two and the close friendship they had, warmed her artificial heart. Maybe Veronica was the right person for him, and maybe she should just get out of the way. The team needed to work together, they needed to be strong and not be nurturing grudges.

She was beginning to think she needed to look outside of the ACT for love. Why jeopardise everything they had built these past few months? Shaking her head, Frankie refocused on the issue at hand.

-Gibson, can you attract the sniper’s attention?- Frankie asked. -Veronica, get ready. You need to nail this.-

-Alright,- Gibson said, adjusting his crouch as Veronica tucked the rifle into her shoulder, but stayed hidden.

Meanwhile, Frankie twisted to face the direction she would be running, and took a moment to clear her head and prepare herself. If one of those sniper rounds hit her in the wrong place, it would be good night sweet princess.

-Okay, whenever you’re ready,- Frankie said.

-All right,- Gibson said. He took a long deep breath, readied his pistol.-Three, two, one.-

He popped up and fired at the balcony. Bullets slammed into the wall, showering plaster and concrete around.

Frankie darted from cover, sprinting across the room. She ducked and dodged around and over furniture, using the scattered debris to her advantage.
